Kottayam: There. was good news for the citizens of Latur town in Maharashtra which has been facing one of its worst droughts this year. Drinking water is making its way to this town – thanks to the joint effort of the families in Kottayam Diocese in Kerala and Maher, a non-governmental organisation.
Families in Kottayam were responding to the call made by ArchBishop Mar Mathew Moolakkattu to donate at least one litre of drinking water each to Latur.
Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church , Cardinal Mar George Alencherry handed over the first instalment of 2 lakh rupees to the director of Maher Sr.Lucy Kurian.
Maher, was established by the Kannur-born Sister Lucy Kurian in 1997 at Pune. It offers a roof for abandoned children, women and those with mental problems.
In Kerala, the scheme is led by the social service wings of Kottayam Diocese-Kottayam Social Service Society, Malabar Social Service Society, Greenvalley Development Society.
