New Delhi: More than 40 percent Indians feel that their parliamentarians are not available in their constituencies, a study by a well-known media research organization has found.
Only a little more than one-third stakeholders said their MPs are doing good work for the constituencies, according to the report ‘Citizen’s Perception of their MPs.’
“The study probed how active MPs are in the last two years, especially because Prime Minister Modi has called upon MPs of ruling party more than twice in the last two years with specific suggestion that they devote more time for the constituency, promote and take forward government schemes,” said a statement from the CMS, a private body that undertook the study.
The report claimed that 44 percent respondents in BJP constituencies believe that their MPs are doing “good work.” The corresponding figure for areas represented by non-BJP parties is only 20 percent, the Hindu reported.
To a question whether their MPs are available in Delhi, nearly 40 percent of respondents said they had no idea. As many as 62 percent of the remaining respondents say their parliamentarians are inaccessible even in the national capital.
The study in 70 clusters of 15 states was conducted during March-April, with a stakeholder reflective sample of 4,000.
Relatively more respondents in the BJP-ruled states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra have acknowledged that their MPs are doing “good” for their constituencies while those in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, think their MPs rarely visit constituencies or are not available locally.
