Ajmer: A 70-year-old woman, who lived on the alms from neighbours in her last days, died in Nullah Bazaar of Ajmer on Thursday. The neighbours collected money to perform her last rites.
Later, when they searched the woman’s room, they found fixed deposit documents amounting to two crore rupees! The documents have been deposited with the respective banks. Since there is no nominee of these fixed deposits, the banks are waiting for someone to claim the money.
Kanaklata had no child and her husband Premnarayan died last year. “She was living like a destitute in one small room at Nullah Bazaar. Her room was situated in the premises of a temple,” said Raju Mishar of the locality.
Taking pity on the woman, the neighbours would offer her food and clothes. The word got around that after her husband died last year, she was left with nothing. “She never said anything. Two years ago, when her husband fell ill he was taken to government hospital for treatment. She went to the government hospital and stood in the queue for her number,” said Bharati of the locality.
According to the neighbours, the couple had rented the small room many years ago and since then were residing alone. “They were poor but good people and, therefore, no one had any problem with them,” added another resident.
Two days back, when Kanak was not seen in the premises, some neighbours went to her room where they found her dead. “We all were sad over her demise and collected money and arranged her funeral and other rituals,” added a neighbour.
When the neighbours and priest of the temple opened the deceased’s room, they found some used clothes and also some old furniture. “When we opened the iron box which was kept under her cot, there were fixed deposit certificates of different banks. We calculated the amount and it came to around two crore rupees,” added another neighbour.
The neighbours collected the documents and handed them over to the respective banks for their disposa, The Times of India reportedl.
“A nephew, whom we had never seen, came from Chattisgarh and claimed that he was their only relative. But now the matter is in bank’s hands” said Mukesh Joshi of Nullah Bazaar. He added that the nephew claimed that he will construct a temple in the memory of his uncle and aunt with the money.
“But we never saw him when the old couple was struggling to make their ends meet,” further said Joshi.
