A farmer claiming to be under a debt of over Rs 300,000 attempted suicide by consuming poison outside Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s residence Sunday morning. Sant Vijay Yadav, 45, has been admitted to the emergency ward of the Civil Hospital where doctors said his condition was now out of danger.
The man met the CM Sunday morning along with some two dozen people reportedly over the huge debt owed on him, a police officer said . After coming out of the CM’s residence, he consumed a poisonous substance he was carrying in a small bottle.
When he started to fall, the police officials posted outside the CM residence checked on him and rushed him to the hospital. During his meeting with the CM, Yadav said he had taken a loan of Rs 200,000 from the State Bank of India and a rural bank five years ago but couldn’t pay them back because the crops failed.
Yadav told the CM he has three daughters and a son, all of whom have dropped out of school because he couldn’t pay their school fees, police said about his meeting. A resident of Kakariya village in Saifai tehsil of Etawah district, Yadav’s nine bighas of land have not produced anything in the last five years. He claimed his current debt was over Rs 350,000 lakh and added that he had been coming to Lucknow to meet the CM for the past two months.
“I had met him about twenty days ago but nothing happened. The amin (loan recovery official) again came to my place recently. So I went to meet him (CM) again. I met him. He took my application and assured me that he will take action on it but I did not want to go back home so I decided to consume the poison,” Yadav said at the hospital.
The 45-year-old is differently abled and uses a prosthetic leg. He said he receives a pension of Rs 300 per month. Gautampalli station officer S K Katiyar said police has initiated action under 107/16 section of the CrPC (possibility of breach of peace) against Yadav, whose family members have been informed
