Kundapura: Tension prevails in coastal Karnataka districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada after miscreants vandalized a church.
Visitors to the Kandlur church near Basrur in Kundapura on Monday morning found the statue of St. Anthony destroyed. The miscreants have also broken the glass enclosure in which the statue was kept.
Kundapura is some 410 km northwest of Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka state.
As the news of the church desecration spread, a crowd gathered and demanded action against the unidentified people, the India Today reported.
Soon the police arrived at the spot and pacified the protesters. The police conducted a preliminary inquiry in the neighborhood and came to a conclusion that the church was vandalized during the wee hours of Monday. They are looking for CCTV footage of the locality to identify the culprits.
This is the second such incident in the past 15 days in coastal Karnataka and it has led to unrest in the region. The police have assured quick action to apprehend the culprits.
