Mokokchung: A police station in a Nagaland town faced violent scenes when people protesting the rape of a minor girl tried to enter it.

A press note from Eastern Nagaland Women Organisation Mokokchung said the girl was raped by a 68-year-old man twice. The victim was staying in the house of the man’s daughter.

The girl from Konyak community and her attacker are residents of Khensa, a village in Mokokchung district of Nagaland, northeastern India.

The accused, who had gone to his daughter’s house on June 4, sexually assaulted the girl in the kitchen. He repeated the crime four days later at his farm and warned the girl not to tell anyone about it.

Several civil and women’s groups in the district condemned the “unimaginable and shameful act” and appealed to the authority to expedite the case and award stringent punishment to the culprit.

Mokokchung police arrested the accused on June 11. The accused was later forwarded to judicial custody.

On June 12, a group of protesters tried to enter Mokokchung police station-I but police stopped them. Officials of Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization submitted a memorandum to the district magistrate and urged the crowd to disperse.

Some protesters then threw stones and the police resort to baton charging and blank firing.

The protesters demanded that the accused be presented to them or to at least show them his face. The police refused their demands, the official said.

Police arrested some people but released them later.

Around two vehicles were damaged in the incident but no one was injured, police added.

The protesters warned they would continue their protest if the accused was bailed out without informing women’s organization. They also demanded grant proper compensation to the victim and ensure women’s safety.
