Imphal: Large numbers of young students of Don Bosco College, Maram were formally introduced to Palliative care and its need in the society by the Palliative Care Society, Imphal.
The awareness programme on Palliative care was held at the auditorium of Don Bosco College, Maram today organized by the society to infuse in young students the need of volunteering for palliative care and its importance to the society.
Addressing the students, Secretary of Palliative Care Society, Imphal Dr Jugindro emphasized on what palliative care is all about.
Palliative care is referred to the care given to improve the quality of life of patients who have a serious or life threatening disease or terminal illness.
The goal of palliative care it to prevent or treat, as early as possible, the symptoms and side effects of the disease and its treatment, in addition to related psychological, social and spiritual problems.
Palliative care is also called comfort care, supportive care or symptom management, said Dr Jugindro.
Further he said that the awareness programme will provide an opportunity to bring equality with people who are nearing death.
It will also develop mutual friendship, care and bring out the goodness among humans.
Dr Jugindro highlighted the works taken up by Palliative Care Society, Imphal after its formation on April 16 last year as a pilot project to spread the necessity of palliative care in the society.
He said that various awareness programmes involving over 2500 students have been conducted till today in different parts of the State including Ukhrul and other valley districts.
Moreover, the Palliative Care Society has organized various programmes including mass cycle rally and other activities, reported e-pao.
After its induction, Palliative Care Society now has over 120 student volunteers from different schools and colleges including medical students, he said.
The Society is backed by over 40 doctors from different fields.
Further, he said that the Society will work to press the State Govt and its agencies to include palliative care in health policies of the State and include it even in educational curriculum.
Valley Rose Chao, a class XII student of Don Bosco College, Maram expressed her keen desire to spread the need for such palliative care in her village.
She said that the awareness programme has enlightened the students.
