Dibrugarh, October 31: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal became very nostalgic while attending a felicitation programme at his alma mater Don Bosco School, Dibrugarh on Monday. Sonowal recalled his fond memories associated with this institution and expressed gratitude to his teachers for imbibing in him the ideals for being a leader of the people.

Chief Minister Sonowal who did schooling in this prestigious educational institution of Upper Assam, was accorded warm welcome today as students cheered in unison for him and clapped thunderously as he shared his memories with them. Journey for Sonowal from an unknown flood ravaged Muluk Gaon to Don Bosco School was not easy and he thanked his elder brother for the guidance and all the hardship he endured.

Asserting that adversity can never overwhelm spirit, Sonowal urged the students to make best use of their school period, which he termed as the golden years of life. There is no short cut to success and all successful people are hard working, Sonowal said. Stating this, the Chief Minister asked students to assiduously pursue their goal and devote quality time in study with discipline and sincerity. He further advised the students to keep their cultural and traditional values and ethos alive and serve mankind with humility.

Underlining the importance of making positive contribution in the society, Sonowal said that good works live beyond life and people continue to eulogize the good works of others. He urged the students to see Assam as a land of possibilities and potentialities and advised them to find out solution in every problem.

Further emphasizing on youth-led development in the country; the Chief Minister said that the young generation had a bigger role to play in nation building. He also said that everybody desired good governance but to provide good governance quality people were needed and educational institutions, especially the teaching community, should strive hard to produce quality people.  

Stating that Don Bosco, Dibrugarh once had a privy position in the sports arena of the nation, Sonowal appealed to students to take active part in sports and cultural activities along with academics. Saying that sports as a way life which built character, Sonowal advocated for developing sportsmanship spirit in every individual.

Coinciding the felicitation ceremony, Sonowal also released an e-book prepared under National Digital Literacy Mission in the school.

Dibrugarh MP Rameswar Teli, MLA Dibrugarh Prashanta Phukan, MLA Lahowal Rituparna Baruah, MLA Moran Chakra Gogoi, MLA Chabua Binod Hazarika, Bishop of Dibrugarh and Principal of Don Bosco School, Dibrugarh were present, among others, in the programme.

To the school authorities, the Chief Minister urged upon the administrators to strive to convert the school into one of the best in the country. He also asked the administrators of the school to incorporate sports and culture development in their education system.

“Sports and culture must go hand in hand with education”, he said.

Bishop Joseph Aind, Salesian Provincial Fr Nestor Guria, Rector Fr Kamil Hora, Principal Fr VA Thomas, President of Don Bosco Alumni, Shalkil Ahmed Khan were among others who spoke on the occasion.

Dibrugarh MP Rameshwar Teli also attended the function along with other MLAs.
