Madurai: Retired Archbishop Peter Fernando of Madurai died on December 31. He was 77.
The mortal remains will be kept in the Madurai Archbishop’s House for respect until 11.00 a.m. on January 1, 2017. Then it will be taken to Madurai cathedral where the requiem Mass will be offered at 3.30 p.m.
Then the body will be taken to Tuticorin cathedral at 10.00 am on January 2, 2017 where it will be buried after the funeral Mass.
Archbishop Fernando was born on March 22, 1939, at Idinthakarai in Tamil Nadu. He was ordained priest on May 31, 1971, and appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Tuticorin on February 23, 1996.
He was appointed as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Madurai on March 22, 2003. He retired from episcopal ministry on July 26, 2014. He was a priest for 40 years and a bishop for 20 years.
He was also secretary of the Doctrinal Commission of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India.
