The song We Will Rise, from the English version of Jayaraj’s Veeram movie has been nominated in the first list of songs competing in the Best Original songs section at the Oscars. The song has been composed by Jeff Rona.

According to the reports, ninety-one songs are eligible for the Original Song category that will be awarded at the 89th Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Tuesday (Dec. 13). Five songs from this list receiving the highest number of votes will become the nominations for final voting for the award and will be announced on Jan. 24.

To be eligible for nomination, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits

Jayaraj’s Veeram is a multi-lingual film and it has been made in Hindi, English and Malayalam. The movie is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth, and is the fifth installment in Jayaraj’s Navarasa series. The film, which also takes inspirations from the Vadakkan Pattukal (Northern Ballads) of North Malabar region in Kerala, tells the story of Chandu Chekavar (Kunal Kapoor), an infamous warrior in the 13th century North Malabar. The film has Bollywood actor Kunal Kapoor in the lead role. Prominent Hollywood technicians have worked for the movie.

Veeram was recently screened at the IFFI, held in Goa. The film is expected to hit the theatres in January 2017.
