Indiana, USA: In a daring move, St. Francis of Assisi walked across enemy lines during the Crusades to meet the Sultan of Egypt. St. Francis and Sultan Al-Malik al-Kamil made a commitment to peace that reportedly improved the relationship between Christians and Muslims and lessened the impact of the Crusades on Muslims.
The local Catholic and Muslim communities will cooperate to bring that story to Fort Wayne with a local premiere showing of “The Sultan and the Saint” on February 4 in the University of Saint Francis (USF), Robert Goldstine Performing Arts Center.
The film, which is being presented by University of Saint Francis, includes dramatic re-enactments and input from Catholic and Muslim scholars, an event news release said.
Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry, Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Imam Nuhu Abdulai of the local Muslim community, and USF President Sister M. Elise Kriss are scheduled to speak briefly before the film, the news release said. Rhoades and Abdulai also will offer a prayer together.
The event is organized by USF’s offices of Campus Ministry, Mission Integration and Spirituality, and Service and Social Action, along with the Fort Wayne Friends of Unity Productions Foundation.
