Jalpaiguri: Joachim Buxla, who was a member of parliament four times from West Bengal, died on March 6 in a private nursing home in Hyderabad, southern India.
The 62-year-old politician was suffering from cancer.
Buxla began his political career as member of the Revolutionary Socialist Party, but later joined the Trinamool (grassroots) Congress (TMC).
His body would be brought to his native place Jalpaiguri in West Bengal on March 7.
He is survived by his wife Maloti Buxla and a son and a daughter, report agencies.
In 1996, Buxla quit his job in a nationalized bank to contest on RSP ticket from Alipurduar Lok Sabha constituency and won.
He continued to win from that seat until 2009 general election when RSP selected another candidate. Buxla quit RSP and fought as an Independent candidate but lost.
He then joined the Trinamool Congress and contested in for a seat in West Bengal legislative assembly in 2011 and 2014 as TMC candidate from Kumargram seat but lost.
West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC president Mamata Banerjee condoled his death.
“Saddened at the passing of Joachim Buxla 4time MP , Alipurduar, Bengal. He was a member of our party. My condolences to his family & friends,” Banerjee twitted.
Baxla was born on January 16, 1955.
