New Delhi: Six of India’s ten best colleges are located in the national capital, according to the first official list of higher educational institutions in the country.
Delhi University’s Miranda House topped the list published by the federal Human Resources Development Ministry on April 3. The Jesuit-managed Loyola College in Chennai, capital of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, came second among the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
Miranda, a women’s college which boasts of distinguished alumni such as filmmaker Mira Nair, politicians Brinda Karat and Sheila Dikshit, author Anita Desai and artist Anjolie Ela Menon, scored 69.39. Established in 1948, the college offers both graduate and postgraduate courses.
This is the first time colleges were ranked under the NIRF which ranks institutions all over the country. The parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception.”
A total 100 colleges from all over the country are in the list. Delhi bags three of the top five colleges.
Delhi’s Shri Ram College of Commerce comes third AND Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College fifth. Bishop Heber College, Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu bagged the fourth position.
St Xavier’s College, Kolkata, another Jesuit institution was placed at the sixth position.
Lady Shri Ram College for Women stands at seven, followed by Dyal Singh College and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College.
The tenth spot goes to the Women’s Christian College, Chennai.
