Hyderabad: Police in Telangana arrested a man, who divorced his wife of one day through a post card.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) V Satyanarayana identified the accused as M Haneef. He said that the accused married the woman on March 16 at a function in the Old City of Hyderabad.

“I am personally monitoring the case. We are investigating as to what exactly happened later in the day when the marriage was solemnized. We have called for records from the qazi so that they can be examined. Depending on the outcome we will take a call. It is also possible that a rape case will be booked against the accused,” Satyanarayana said.

Meanwhile, cops have booked a case against Haneef under sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 498 (A husband or relative of husband subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 420 (cheating).

According to Bhavani Nagar police station’s sub-inspector B Ramesh, Haneef is already married and the victim was his second wife. “He did not divorce the first wife. The victim was a divorcee and this was her second marriage. We are told that the original documents of the victim’s first divorce were not given at the time of her marriage to Haneef. We are probing all angles,” he said.

Cops also said that they will get the victim’s statement recorded before a judicial magistrate in accordance with section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
