Kochi,Kerala: For 37-year-old Shaju, from Nilamel in Kollam district, it is a second birth, thanks to Sister Merrin Paul, a retired headmistress of Infant Jesus High School, Aranattukara in Thrissur district .
Sister Merrin Paul donated her kidney to Shaju, who was suffering from kidney ailments for the past 17 years. The kidney was successfully harvested and transplanted into Shaju at VPS Lakeshore hospital , Kochi on Wednesday, April 5. He was selected as the recipient from those who were registered with the Kidney Federation of India, founded by Fr. Davis Chiramel.
It was during the time of her retirement Sister Merrin Paul took the decision to donate one of her kidneys to give a message of compassion to fellow beings to her students. This led her to register with the Kidney Federation of India.
Shaju’s one kidney was removed 16 years back. Shaju who works in a cushion manufacturing unit, later found that the second kidney was also damaged. He then registered with the Kidney Federation seeking a donor, five years ago. A bank account was opened in Shaju’s name to find the amount to meet the surgery and post -surgery expenses. Both the donor and recipient are in good condition, according to the hospital.
