Kochi: The Jacobite faction of the Malankara Church has said that there is a lack of clarity in last week’s Supreme Court verdict upholding the 1934 Constitution of the Church and denying the church group its right to offer prayers in the disputed churches.
The church will approach the Supreme Court seeking more clarity, said Catholicos Baselios Thomas I and synod secretary Joseph Mar Gregorios at the Patriarchal Centre, Puthenkurisu on July 10.
Jacobite Church publicity convenor Moncy Vavachan, citing Church officials, said they were speaking to the press after the Church synod met in the wake of the Supreme Court order. He said that the Jacobite Church respected the Supreme Court verdict but could not approve of it. The church would stand staunchly under the See of Antioch and under the Patriarch.
The court verdict is on a question faith and the church group will seek justice from the court, the church leaders said. They announced that a rally declaring their faith will be organised at the all-Kerala level on August 28, The Hindu reported.
The Church leaders also said that the Jacobite Church had a tradition of 2,000 years and there was no going back on the intentions with which churches were established. The Jacobite group also holds that the Supreme Court verdict related only to four churches and so is not binding on the other churches.
Bishops Thomas Mar Themotheos, Kuriakose Mar Theophelus, Mathews Mar Severios and trustee of the Church Thampu George Thukalan were among those present.
