Varanasi: Police have registered a case and launched a probe on October 15 after a young man from Fiji studying in the Banaras Hindu University complained about being thrashed by seniors under the pretext of ragging.
Munish Krisil Sami, a first-year graduate student in the university in Varanasi, was taking his bike out from the parking from his department on October 13 when the seniors approached him and asked him a few questions. When he refused to answer them, they beat him up.
The incident occurred just three weeks after protests erupted in the university following harassment of female students in the campus.
Sami told the police that he first wanted to keep quiet over the matter but decided to lodge a complaint when he saw the same boys following him next day. He complained to the university’s proctorial board.
The police have filed a First Information Report on October 15 and launched a probe. The anti-ragging cell of BHU has also initiated a probe.
After Sami lodged a complaint, the same seniors again beat him on October 14 night near Lal Bahadur hostel. Sami, who does not know the assaulters by name, claims that he can recognize them if he sees them again.
Sami registered a complaint on Lanka Police Station, who registered the case against unknown assailants. Station Officer Sanjiv Mishra said told media that efforts are on to catch the accused.
