Silchar: The last rites of two residents of Sharifnagar village in south Assam’s Karimganj district had to be performed on National Highway 6 on June 17 as the entire village is inundated.
Sharifnagar falls under Karimganj North constituency, around 60km from Silchar.
Nishi Namasudra, 50, and Kulendra Namasudra, 52, were neighbors and were suffering from various ailments for the past few months. Both wage earners, they died of cardiac arrest early on June 17.
Manna Dey, one of the persons present at the cremation, told The Telegraph that the bodies were taken to a place near the national highway on boats and then carried on shoulders to the highway and cremated.
“The entire village is marooned. There is no space to perform the last rites if somebody dies. It gets frightening at night with no electricity,” he said.
There has been no power supply for the past four to five days, he said.
Karimganj North legislator Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, who was present, said the situation in the village and in the district has been grim because of floods for the past many days.
“People should help each other in these troubled times,” he said.
In Karimganj district, the flood situation remained almost unchanged on June 17 with all the three rivers continuing to flow above the danger level.
According to data from Karimganj water resources division, the water level of the Longai was 23.14 meters and its danger level is 22 meters on June 17.
There has been around 3.52 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours.
