Kohima: The Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) in association with the National Commission for Women, New Delhi organised one day seminar on the topic ‘Know Your Rights’ at Red Cross Building conference hall on June 15.
The legal awareness seminar was organised in association with the Kohima Lotha Eloe Ekhung (KLEE) with Advocate, Ncumbemo Mozhui as the resource person.
Deliberating on the topic, Mozhui informed that women’s rights and issues can be broadly classified under the Constitution of India, the Domestic Violence Act, 2005, the Sexual Harassment of women at workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 and the code of Criminal Procedure, 1908-Rape. Later he elaborated the Acts with specific Articles of the Constitution of the different classified rights.
It is important that women should be aware of her legal rights not to empower to do as she pleases but because through the awareness a woman can approach the right forum for help and guidance, Mozhui expressed. He further informed that although women might be victim of any crime such as murder, robbery, etc, but the crimes which are directed specially against women is characterized as “Crime against Women.”
Mozhui further stressed on Marriage, Divorce & Inheritance, Domestic violence Act, Crime against Women (POSCO) Act, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Women & Child helpline, human trafficking and Nagaland Legal Service Authority during the seminar and later held an interactive session with the Participants.
Earlier, introductory speech was delivered by Jakhalu, Chairperson, NSCW while Renbeni Kikon, Women leader, Ao Church pronounced the invocation. Mhabeni Lotha, Jt.Secy, KLEE moderated the daylong seminar which was attended by hundreds of women belonging to Lotha Community.
