Guwahati, Nov. 16, 2018: Dr Bhubaneswar borooah cancer institute (BBCI) , Guwahati to commemorate one year of taking over of the institute by department of Atomic Energy (DAE) , Government of India as a unit of Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai organized a Press Meet on national press day on 16th November 2018.
Dr Amal Chandra kayaking, director of BBCI has informed that, prevalence of non-communicable diseases like cancer , heart disease, diabetes, stroke and chronic respiratory diseases etc in the country have increased 30% in 1990 to 55% in 2016, as per latest report of global diseasea burden study group.
Out of 39,000 new cancer patients in the north Eastern India , Assam alone contribution 29000 cancer patients.
At BBCI during the last year 10,982 new patients and 79,151 old patients were seen. In men 55% and in women 30% of all cancers are tobacco related cancers. Prevalence of tobacco consumption in Assam has increased from 39% to 48%.
To reduce the flow of patients going of North Eastern region which inflicts huge financial burden on patient’s family, BBCI has taken few steps in this regard. A new Guest House for patients (second unit) has been started inside the institutional premises.
Free lunch for outdoor patients (second unit) has been started inside the institutional premises. Free lunch for out door patients has also been started through ‘Annakoot’ scheme.
A state of the art CT- Scan machine and high dose radio Isotope therapy ward which is first of its the entire north eastern would started within a month. Earlier patient had to go outside for Radio Isotope therapy due to absence of facility.
To provide better care for patients number of nursing and para- medical staff has been increased.
