Mumbai, May 5, 2019: Churches in Mumbai have planned to prohibit parking of vehicles within 40 feet of their premises.
They also mull a ban on carrying big bags inside.
These are precautionary measures in view of Sri Lanka Sunday Easter bombings.
Father Nigel Barrett, spokesperson of the Archdiocese of Bombay, said the decision was taken during a meeting conducted by their archbishop Cardinal Oswald Gracias, with priests from the Catholic churches in the city.
“Last week, the archbishop held at meeting at his house, which was attended by representatives of various churches and the Mumbai police commissioner. Based on those discussions, we decided to take these measures,” the report quotes Father Barrett as saying.
Cardinal Oswald Gracias has also advised the churches to take all security measures in consultation with the local police.
The archbishop of Mumbai along with the general secretary of Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind Maulana Mahmood Madani also issued a joint statement condemning the terror attacks in Sri Lanka. Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind Maulana is a body of Islamic scholars.
The joint statement read, “Apart from causing loss of innocent lives, terrorist attacks leave an impact on the peace and harmony of society. It is the duty of all religious leaders to stand up and use all our resources to cleanse society of this evil.”
