Hyderabad, August 6, 2019: A Hyderabad-based movement has urged Muslims to destroy the skins of animals they sacrifice on Bakrid, the second of two Islamic holidays in India.
Also called Eid al-Adha, or the “Festival of the Sacrifice,” it honors the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience command.
The festival falls on August 11 this year.
Awami Insaaf Movement, a non-political organization in Hyderabad, capital of Telangana, has taken the initiative to create awareness among Muslims to inform them why the sheepskin has to be destroyed.
Khalid Hassan, the movement’s general secretary, has listed out the reasons for why Muslims should destroy the animal skin instead of selling it or donating it.
“Usually a maximum number of Muslims who offer sacrifice of an animal donate the hide/ skin to charity organizations so that they can sell the same and use the money for their purposes.”
A few years ago, the price of the skin used to be between 200 to 300 rupees.
But the middle men have reduced the price of the skin drastically as a result of which the charity organizations are getting a mere 20 to 30 rupees per skin.
“In such a situation it is wiser to donate money to the charity organizations/madarsas and destroy the animal skin,” he adds.”
He also noted that although the price of raw material has dropped to 10 percent of its actual value, no corresponding drop has happened in the prices of finished leather goods. This is a clear indication that middle-men and factories are raking in all the profits,” Hasan explained.
He also noted that 99 percent of traders of skin are Muslims.
Many Muslims used to donate the skin to Madarsas (Islamic school), or orphanages that meet a large part of their yearly expenses by selling the skins. However, with prices crashing drastically, Madarsas are unable to take care of their wards.
“Since people were already donating skins, they weren’t keen on donating further funds to these organizations making survival extremely difficult.
Khalida Parveen, president of Amoomat Society, Hyderabad, hailed the proposal as “a very good move. We must teach these rich people a lesson.”
