Jabalpur, August 2, 2019: The Jabalpur High Court has sent a notice to Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, who represents Bhopal in the Lok Sabha, on a petition accusing her of making communal speeches during her election campaign.
The court has asked the Hindu religious woman and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party to reply within four weeks.
Rajesh Dixit, a Bhopal-based journalist, has filed the election petition as a voter. He says Singh had sought votes on religious grounds during her election campaign and therefore her election should be declared void. She had also made communal and religious speeches during his entire election campaign, while her rival Congress candidate Digvijay Singh was “falsely” accused of making statements on saffron terrorism, Dixit alleged.
According to the Section 123 of the Representation of the People Act, no candidate can seek votes on religious grounds and hence the election of the sadhvi should also be cancelled, he argued.
The High Court has issued a notice against Sadhvi Pragya Singh on the election petition and asked her to file her reply. The next hearing on the case will be held on September 9.
