Mananthavady, August 25, 2019: Sister Lucy Kalappura, who was recently expelled by the Franciscan Clarist Congregation (FCC), has sought police protection as she fears physical assault on her.

“I have also asked for protection from the police. But they have not done anything so far,” Sister Kalappura told indianexpress.com on August 25.

Holding the FCC responsible for any untoward incident that might happen to her, the 54-year-old nun said, “I may be killed. I have to die one day anyway. An unnatural murder maybe what’s destined for me. FCC and its province in Mananthavady will be responsible for it. I will always be here at the convent in Mananthavady.”

Sister Kalappura has been in the forefront of protests demanding action against rape-accused Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal.

She had earlier said that she has been facing mental torture at the convent in Wayanad for nearly one year and the hostile treatment of the convent authorities has now reached its peak. A few days ago a priest and five nuns were booked by the local police for releasing a defamatory video of Sister Kalappura.

Kalappura recently alleged that she was locked up in the Karakamala convent in Wayanad. She said the doors were locked from outside when she tried to go out to attend the holy mass. After she informed the police they came and unlocked the door. It was following this that a defamatory video was released against the nun.

Meanwhile, the Catholic Laymen’s Association (CLA) has come out in support of the expelled nun who was accused of allowing a couple of journalists into the convent through the backdoor.

The CLA said that many priests had defamed the Church by secretly entering the convent through the backdoor and sexually exploiting nuns. Many nuns were murdered or had committed suicide. The CLA is conducting a survey across the state to collect the details of the victims.
