Pilar, October 5, 2019: Christians should draw values from the Bible to contribute to a good and compassionate society.
This was stressed at the opening of a theological consultation in Goa.
The Society of Pilar organized the October 3-10 consultation at Pilar Theological College.
Archbishop Anil Couto of Delhi, who spoke on the poor and the marginalized, underscored the need for integral human development. He urged Christians to imbibe prophetic courage to enter into cultures and transform the evil and unjust structures that challenge modern society.
Cardinal Oswald Cardinal Gracias, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India who presided over the consultation, commended the Pilar Society for its dynamic service and selfless commitment. He spoke about contributing to everything and collaborating with everyone involved in transforming society into just and equitable.
Archbishop Thomas Macwan too appreciated the Pilar Fathers for their missionary spirit and simplicity. He said Christians should always immerse in the culture of the place, especially the language of the place.
Archbishop Felix Toppo of Ranchi, sharing his experience of working in the Chotanagpur belt, highlighted the need to protect the interest of the tribal people and their land while developing the rich mineral resources of the state. Short term gains could destroy human existences, he warned.
Bishop Lawrence Pius of Dharmapuri focused on the social media and its influence on the youth. Understanding the youth perspective is important in order to guide them, he added.
Auxiliary Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas of Ranchi, a member of the Pilar Society, highlighted the importance of dialogue with political leaders and shared principles that could lead to critical contribution for people’s well-being.
In his keynote address, Pilar Society’s superior general Father Sebastiao Mascarenhas, said the consultation aims to define a path for his congregation to contribute to a good and compassionate society, following Jesus who went about doing good.
All challenges, he said, are opportunities as God gives hope in all.
The dignitaries were welcomed with traditional symbols from all over India: Buddhist beads, Khasi shawls, flower garlands, Punjabi garlands of notes, Nepali and Marathi headgear etc.
The consultation was attended by 175 Pilar priests, Sisters and theology students.
