Bangalore, Jan 21, 2020: Archbishop Peter Machado of Bangalore on January 21 urged Catholics in his archdiocese to observe a day of reparation after miscreants desecrated sacred Hosts in a church.

“I am not only terribly shocked and greatly grieved that desecration was done to the Eucharistic Lord in that church,” the archbishop said in a press note.

According to reports, some miscreants on January 20 night barged into St. Francis Assisi Church, Kengeri, near Bengaluru, and vandalized the altar. They also broke open the Tabernacle and threw the sacred species on the floor.

“We all know that this sacrilege and serious dishonor done to Our Blessed Lord and Savior is a matter of great concern not only to the parishioners of St. Francis Assisi Parish but it also affects the religious sentiments of all of us in the entire Archdiocese,” the archbishop said.

The prelate quoted parish priest Capuchin Father Sathish Kumar as saying that a complaint has already been lodged at the local police station, and investigation was being conducted.

The archbishop has appealed to all parishes and Church institutions in the archdiocese to observe January 24 as ‘A day of reparation, to praise, worship and glorify the Eucharistic Lord in a very special way.”

Archbishop Machado has requested the parish priests and chaplains to expose the Blessed Sacrament for adoration on that day and keep it for at least 12 hours from morning for public veneration in all churches and religious houses in the archdiocese.

Archbishop further stated that he is confident the police and investigative authorities would spare no efforts to bring to book the perpetrators of this heinous crime and also to find out what was the motive behind this ignominious deed.
