Kolkata, February29, 2020 — What once a pair of idealistic young people started out to chase as an utopian dream today has become a movement for humanity – Selfless Love Movement in the City of Joy, Kolkata. They celebrated the movement’s entering adulthood – 18 years on February 28, 2020.

Every year in sharp contrast to Valentine’s Day (14 February) on February 28 ‘Selfless Love Day’ is celebrated in Korak Day’s Satwik Ashram, in Madhyamgram near Kolkata’s international airport.

It all started on the eve of the golden jubilee of India’s Independenece day, on 16 August 1996 when Korak Day was a mere 25 and half year old dreamer and formed the Charitable Trust Amar Nijer (My Own). Then ten years ago Chandragupt Day a teenager of fourteen joined the work.

“The word ‘love’ no longer remains that special thing anymore in this world,” says Day.

He adds, So too, giving truly-dedicated love to someone, is rare too.”

Day questions current love scenario asking, “How much do you appreciate a friend or a relationship where you come to know that the other person/ your friend / your lover is selfishly loving you, where you are just a medium to fulfill his/her selfish goals?”

Suggesting an alternative and committed way of loving Day says, “How about this now, “I love you because I, love you and just want the best for you and nothing in return. This my dear, is Selfless Love.”

At Korak Day’s ‘Satwik Humane’, in Kolkata, “it is all about 100% Selfless Love and not a percent less is acceptable,” says 49 year old Day the founder of the Trust Amar Nijer (My Own).

“Charity is not loving, because charity takes dignity away from the receiver and often fills the giver with pride,” believes Day who left a career as a naval officer.

It all started on 28 February 2002 when Korak made Nitai a dying-destitute from a Calcutta street, his first Selfless Love (Satwik) family-member.

Day muses, “You know, it is not easy to love and stay committed. Especially, loving someone selflessly that too a destitute from the street who is neither related to you, nor can be of any use to you. But then Selfless Love is not for the cunning, and charity is back-dated.”

In the earlier days of his humanitarian service Day used to be a full-time volunteer at Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity home for the dying destitute who came to Kalighat’s ‘Nirmal Hriday’ (Pure Heart).

At Nirmal Hriday he noticed to his utter shock that, once a person recovers and gets better, he/she would be put back in the streets, to become a dying destitute, once more.

Nitai had come in and gone out of Nirmal Hriday quite a few times and this time after getting treated in the MC ‘charity-hospital,’ he did not want to go out and was hiding around. But he was discharged as per the rule at MC facility.

When journalists asked Mother Teresa about this situation at Nirmal Hriday, Mother would say understandingly that with her charity brigade, she could do for the destitute till that step only, and if someone wanted, he/she could do the next step.

Day chuckles, “Even if they say that charity begins at home but in reality, its love that makes a home; or else a home becomes an address only.”

“Not just a missionary of love but even more was required, a missionary of Selfless Love: Aamar Nijer My Own,” Day insists.

For 18 years Korak Day and his family of associates had a rule for this work: a no donation work.

“Only those who could make this ‘Family of Selfless Love’, his /her own family and share monetarily on a monthly basis, without failing, could be a part of this work: like Dr. Dipak Patel of USA,” explains Day.

Over the years, Day and associates created award-winning film MY KARMA with the best from the film industry of Calcutta.

Day has also created 100+ professionally recorded songs (Korak Gaan) in Bangla, Hindi, Urdu and English. He created many documentaries, fiction-films, vlogs, music videos, and wrote 10 books for online selling with one being Amazon #1 bestseller. END
