New Delhi, April 14, 2020: The Nepal unit of the Gandhi Peace Foundation has honored two Indian Christians for their service to the poor affected by the nationwide lockdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The foundation applauded James Massey, secretary, All India Christian Congress and Baptist Mission Church of India, and Minakshi Singh, chairperson of Unity in Christ, a registered NGO.
The foundation is an international body that promotes the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi by propagating non-violence, tolerance, global brotherhood and world peace.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who imposed a 21-day lockdown on March 25, wants people to stay home, stay safe and stay alive. And on April 14, he extended it to May 3 as the government’s continued efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic.
On April 13, Massey received the certificate of appreciation from the Nepal foundation for his efforts to provide food supplies to poor people affected by lockdown, while Singh received it on April 2.
Massey and Singh are honored for their social service to humanity, a statement from the Nepal foundation said.
Both began to help the poor in different areas of Delhi since April 26 and they will continue until the first week of May.
“The certificate of appreciation from GPFN came as a surprise,” Massey told Matters India.
According to him, thousands of poor and needy now suffer because of the lockdown. They need help.
Massey and his team provide food provisions at least 50 to 60 people daily.
Likewise, Singh and group supplies cooked food and other supplies to more than 100 people daily.
Speaking to Matters India, Singh, said, “It is a humble experience to receive the certificate of appreciation from GPFN.”
Her organization together with her volunteers and friends reach out to as many people as possible. They are in dire need of food and other items at this time of the Coronavirus pandemic.
“Due to lockdown extension, we have decided to continue our distribution of cooked food and supply of ration kits till May 3,” Singh said.
“The poor need each one of us to contribute to this cause generously. It is our commitment to serve our needy fellow citizens,” she added.
