Dubai, April 29, 2020: The death of an Indian businessman in Dubai a few days ago was a case of suicide, Dubai Police confirmed April 29.
Brigadier Abdullah Khadim Bin Sorour, director of Bur Dubai police station, said Joy Arakkal committed suicide by jumping from the 14th floor of a building in Business Bay on April 23.
Arakkal had come to limelight after he built a 45,000 square feet house in Wayanad, the biggest in Kerala, a year ago.
Brigadier Bin Sorour told Khaleej Times that Arakkal’s death “was a suicide. Investigations are over and his body will be flown back to India.”
The official said the businessman was with a friend and his son when he went out to have a smoke. “He plunged to death and his family called the police and informed us immediately.”
Police said the Gold Card visa holder committed suicide due to financial reasons.
Arakkal, 54, from Kerala’s Wayanad district, was the owner of Dubai-based Innova Refining and Trading FZE. He is survived by his wife Celine Joy and children Arun Joy and Ashley Joy.
Arakkal was among the Indian businessmen awarded the 10-year Gold Card visa by the UAE government in 2019.
The Indian Home Ministry has granted special permission to fly Arakkal’s remains to India in a chartered air ambulance. Four family members, including Arakkal’s wife and sons will accompany his mortal remains to Kozhikode, Kerala. They are expected to arrive on April 30.
