Dubai, April 24, 2020: The owner of Kerala’s biggest house died of a massive heart attack far away from home in Dubai.

The death on April 23 was confirmed people close to Joy Arakkal, owner of the Arakkal Palace in Kerala’s Waynad district. He was 54.

Arakkal was the managing director of Dubai-headquartered Innova Refining and Trading FZE.

Hailing from the farming community of Varayal near Mananthavady, Arakkal did his studies by working part-time. He then went to the Middle East.

His firm in the UAE is engaged in trading and reprocessing of petroleum and petrochemical products. Wit refineries in Sharjah and Ras al Khaimah in the UAE and Dammam in Saudi Arabia, the firm has been supplying lubricants to automobiles, industries and ships.

It also got terminal operations – storage and handling of bulk cargo to be transported by road tanks and ships – with four storage facilities Sharjah, Dubai and Dammam.

In India, Arakkal is on the board of 11 companies and had been active in several charitable activities.

“Along with Aster DM Foundation, Arakkal was setting up houses for 25 flood-affected families at Thalappuzha in Wayanad,” said Basheer Kadavath, a manager with Arakkal’s firm in Wayanad.

Father Joshy Valiplackal, an associate of Arakkal, said he had taken 40 percent shares and served as a director of Wam Tea, a company promoted by the Congregation of St Theresa priests to help 500 small tea growers of Wayanad. “He also had plans to set up a large poultry farming project for the needy people of the area,” the priest said.

Due to COVID lockdown,. Arakkal is survived by wife Celine Joy and children Arun Joy and Ashley Joy.
