Chennai, May 8, 2020: The reopening of liquor shops has led to the death of four people in various parts of Tamil Nadu, southern India.

Tirunelveli district police arrested a 42-year-old man for hacking his mother to death in an inebriated condition at Chettikulam village near Kudankulam. The accused, Rajan, had a property dispute with his mother Jayamani and on May 7 night he hacked her when she refused to bequeath the ancestral house to him.
In another incident on the outskirts of the city, two men were arrested for murdering their friend in an inebriated condition. Esakkimuthu, the victim, and his friends were consuming alcohol when an argument broke out. In a fit of rage, the two others smashed his head with a stone.
In Trichy, a 20-year-old man was murdered while a middle-aged man was found dead in separate incidents and both were under the influence of alcohol.
Ranjithkumar of Perur was hacked to death by two brothers Venkat, 24 and Gopi, 21 outside his house. In the other case, a restaurant employee was found dead in front of a shop on Big bazaar street.
At Alanganallur in Madurai, an 18-year-old first year BA student attempted suicide by immolating herself after her father, a construction labourer, picked up a quarrel with her under the influence of alcohol.
