Manila, Sept 24, 2020: Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, has recovered from coronavirus disease.

After several days of strict self-isolation, he has tested negative for COVID-19, said a September 23 message.

“On this Feast Day of Padre Pio, known for his prayer for healing, let us offer a thanksgiving prayer to the Lord and Mother Mary for her intercession, and offer as well prayer for the continued good health of Cardinal Tagle,” said the note from Dominus Est, a faith-based group that announced the news of his recovery.

“Thank you to all of you who joined us in prayer for his healing,” it said.

Many people thanked God for the Cardinal’s healing. One of them is Lilia Romero of Manila, who said, “Thank you Lord for healing our beloved cardinal.”

Tagle, 63, former Archbishop of Manila, tested positive for Covid-19 on September 10 as he arrived in Manila for a brief vacation and visit his elderly parents from the Vatican.

He took over the responsibility of the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, also known as Propaganda Fide, on Feb 9.

The Propaganda Fide, which was established by Pope Gregory XV in 1622, oversees the missionary work of the church in Asia, Africa and Oceania that comprises about 4,000 dioceses.

He is also the president of Caritas Internationalis, the federation of Catholic charities worldwide.

According to church sources, earlier, at least four bishops from the Philippines had tested Covid-19 positive. Sadly, two of them have died, namely retired Bishop Manuel Sobreviñas of Imus and retired Archbishop Oscar Cruz of Lingayen-Dagupan.

The other two prelates—Bishop Broderick Pabillo, Apostolic administrator of Manila, and retired Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez of Caloocan have recovered.
