Kolkata: The music department of a school in Kolkata has engineered the launch of a project where artists from across the globe come together to spread the message of love, hope and unity.

“Artists from Japan to Brazil from Canada to Australia have come together to share just one message of Love, Hope and Unity,” Peter Gomes, head of music department at Don Bosco School Park Circus, that coordinated 80 artists from 32 countries for the “We are the World.”

Gomes and his team started working on the project in May, when a nationwide lockdown to coronavirus pandemic was at its peak in India.

A 6 minute video project had its world premiere September 25. “This song is recreated with the intent of creating a global bonding. All music and vocal parts are created by us. No third party content has been used,” Gomes told Matters India after the premiere.

Martinho-Zinho from Brazil compiled and created the video for the project.

The group has acknowledged the original composers of the song and has duly mentioned them in the credits.

Energized by the project, Gomes plans to keep doing more global collaboration projects in the future.

‘We Are the World’ was a charity single originally recorded by the supergroup USA for Africa in 1985. The original album originated when artistes Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Michael Omartian and Lionel Richie came together to create one of the most iconic songs of all time – We are the World.

The song was intended to spread the message of love and charity that would eventually go on to sell more than 7 million copies and raise more than US$60 million for African famine relief.
