Ahmednagar (Maharashtra), September 11, 2020: A Salesian NGO has built a new check-dam at Ujjani-Pimpalgaon in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, Western India to address the agrarian distress of farmers.
The Don Bosco Development Society (DBDS) through its implementing partner, Bosco Gramin Vikas Kendra (BGVK) is currently implementing the project as part of climate change.
This project is supported by Don Bosco Mondo (Bonn – Germany), said Salesian Father Rolvin D’Mello, executive director of DBDS.
Father Manuel Murzello, treasurer of the Salesian Province of Mumbai, September 10 inaugurated the newly built check-dam in the presence of Father D’Mello and Father George D’Abreo, director of BGVK, farmers and other dignitaries.
Speaking on the occasion Father Murzello emphasized the pressing need of caring for the endorsement.
Father D’Mello thanked Don Bosco Mondo for their support not just for this particular project but for several other development projects. He also thanked the local administration for their support.
“A good number of farmers will be benefiting through this newly built check-dam as this will increase the groundwater table and recharge the nearby wells. And eventually, this will help them for their agriculture,” said Father D’Mello.
This project on climate change is currently being implemented in Ahmednagar, Beed, Aurangabad, Jalna and Parbhani and focuses on conservation and management of water resources, organic farming and linkages to government entitlements, he said.
DBDS was founded in 2001 to enable individuals and communities to work for the sustainable development of people.
It has been active in tribal, rural and urban areas in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
Since its inception, DBDS has been working in communities addressing the issues related to women, children, livelihood, human rights, environment, education, food security, health, vocational skills training and water and sanitation.
