Varanasi: People’s Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR), an NGO that works for the promotion of human rights, held a workshop on gender equality for youth.

The November 8 workshop was a dialogue with girls and boy to tackle gender disparities for building a sustainable future for all, Lenin Raghuvanshi, founder and CEO of PVCHR, told Matters India.

The training was held in collaboration with the United Nations, Tata Trust, Child Rights and You, Savitri Bai Phule Women Forum, International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims and others at the PVCHR office.

In dialogue, 44 girls and boys from Varanasi districts participated.

At the starting of the dialogue, many exercises were done to understand the behavioral practice of both boys and girls on gender issues.

At the end of the workshop, participants agreed to organize further training on Sustainable Development Goal in their villages with the formation of the youth groups, Raghuvanshi said.

“For sustainable development, it is a pre-condition to eliminate democratic deficit due to hegemonic masculinity, caste system and patriarchy. It is also a way to prevent negative conflicts in society,” he added.

The topics that were discussed include gender inequality, sexual attraction, Constitutional rights and youth participation, gender equality and Sustainable Development Goals, the role of youth in gender equality and informing about Helpline number – “Mission Shakti,” which is Uttar Pradesh government’s women empowerment programme.

“It was the first time we are participating in such a type of dialogue. It clears our much confusion. We are looking forward to learning more and amplify our voice louder,” Shirin Shabana Khan, a staff at PVCHR and resource person, told Matters India.

Established in 1996, PVCHR fights for the rights of marginalized people in India. As a neo-Dalit movement, it promotes to establish a society based on equal dignity for all.
