Kochi: The body of a 45-year-old nun was found February 14 in a quarry in the southern Indian state of Kerala.
Sister Jessina Thomas, a member of the Missionary Congregation of the Daughters of St. Thomas, was missing from St Thomas Convent at Vazhakala, a suburb of Kochi, the state’s commercial capital.
The police at nearby Thrikkakara station got information that a body was found in the quarry close to the convent. It was identified as that of the missing nun, the police said.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death. The body has been shifted to the Kalamassery Medical College. The cause for the death can be known only after autopsy on February 15, police said. They said they do not suspect any foul play in the death as the nun was under treatment mental problem since 2011.
The St Thomas Convent authorities said Sister Thomas was undergoing treatment at Kusumagiri Mental Health Centre, Kakkanad, for the past three years.
They said Sister Thomas was missing after breakfast. When they failed to find her until noon, the nuns informed the local police. The body was found in the quarry quite late in the evening.
Sister Thomas was a native of Koruthodu village in the Idukki district of Kerala.
Sister Thomas was the latest among more than 20 Catholic religious women who died in mysterious circumstances in Kerala in the past three decades.
Oh. Not again! She was 45. Reported to have been mentally ill since last 10 years which means from age 35. Why nuns become mental case? How many nuns are currently in such state? Police must do a thorough investigation.
