RLD leader Ajit Singh dies of Covid-19

New Delhi: Ajit Singh, federal minister in several governments and one of India’s seniormost politicians, died May 6. He was 82.

The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief had been battling Covid, his son Jayant Chaudhary tweeted.

Ajit Singh was diagnosed with Covid on April 20, his son said in tweets. “He battled his condition till the very end and breathed his last today morning,” he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among those who paid tribute to the politician, known to be a prominent voice of farmers.

“He was always dedicated to the cause of farmers. He ably fulfilled many responsibilities at the centre,” PM Modi wrote.

Ajit Singh, an alum of IIT Kharagpur and the Illinois Institute of Technology, was a seven-time MP and federal minister in the governments of VP Singh, P V Narasimha Rao, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh. He enjoyed an immense following in politically vital Uttar Pradesh, especially its western parts dominated by Jats.

The son of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, Ajit Singh quit the computer industry to return to India and join politics when his father fell ill.

He became a Rajya Sabha member in 1986. When his father died the next year, he was asked to take over as chief of the Lok Dal, but amid internal tussles, the party split. Ajit Singh then formed his own party.

He went on to win many Lok Sabha elections from Baghpat in western Uttar Pradesh, his father’s constituency. He only lost twice from Baghpat, once in 1998 and then in 2014. In 2019, he shifted to Muzaffarpur in UP but lost to the BJP.

Throughout his political career, he was known to stitch up sharp alliances that mostly landed him on the ruling side.

He was the President of Lok Dal (A) and Janata Party in 1987 and 1988. In 1989, he joined the Janata Dal when many parties decided to merge under the leadership of VP Singh to fight the Congress.When VP Singh was Prime Minister, Ajit Singh took over as Industries Minister.

Later, he joined the Congress and became Food Minister in the Narasimha Rao government. He won the 1996 election as a Congress candidate but quit the party the same year and formed the Rashtriya Lok Dal.

He was Minister of Agriculture in the Vajpayee-led BJP government from 2001 to 2003. In 2011, his party joined the Congress-led UPA and he became Civil Aviation Minister.
