Kochi: Sathyadeepam, Kerala’s leading Church weekly, has criticized the ongoing Syro-Malabar Church Synod for allegedly deviating from real issues affecting Oriental rite.

The real issue facing the Church is not liturgical but the controversial land deals, said the latest editorial of the weekly published by Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese.

“The real crisis faced by the Church is the decisions which were made as well as left out by the Synod on the land deal row going on in the Ernakulam Major archdiocese. It is not a question of identity that can only be fulfilled by turning towards the East. The truth is that those who create problems in the Church are those who make the liturgy an issue for shrouding the real issues,” said the editorial.

“Due to ‘some persons’ doing real-estate business in the name of the Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese, registered as a charitable trust, it has come to a situation where 5.84 crore (58.4 million rupees) has to be given as fine to the Income Tax (I-T) department. The synod needs to urgently discuss the findings of the I-T department about the archdiocese headed by the Major Archbishop of the Church,” said the editorial.

Meanwhile, the Synod session, slated to end on August 27, is progressing on digital platform. Crucial decisions are awaited at the end of the session.

  1. Courageous stand. Most Catholic journals, usually owned by bishops or congregations haven’t got the guts to speak for truth and justice within the community. They are told to only print”good news”!!

  2. When did the church leaders, be it any Group or Rite, take the burning issues of “Corruptions within the Church/Group/Rite, Casteism among Christians, Clerical sexual abuses, Suicides of priests and nuns” SERIOUSLY and initiate appropriate actions to curb them???

They rarely or never do. Why? Because they are NOT the “Followers of Christ” but only “Worshippers of Christ”. This is the bitter truth.

  3. Sathyadeepam weekly is not a leading Church weekly. It is not officially recognised as a publication by the Syro-Malabar Church. It has wide circulation in the northern region. As one who has been subscribing it and been a regular reader for over 25 years ,I can say sincerely that it has drifted its original stand as a mouthpiece of the Church and embraced secularism in some way. Articles and letters to editor which were opposed to Catholic faith appeared without any comment by the editor. There is serious differences between the priests who run the weekly and the Archbishop in matters liturgical as well as mundane aspects of administration.
If the Archbishop or any priests acted malafide in any land deal or other subjects, the faithful are not supporters ,but they want legal action and not sheer accusation or condemnation in bad tone and language. Very sorry to say that neither the authorities nor the rebel priests led by Sathyadeepam care for the teachings of Jesus Christ to solve a problem. May be because they have no unconditional faith in Jesus Christ.
