New Delhi: A Catholic nun was found hanging from the window of her convent chapel in Faridkot, a town in the the northern Indian state of Punjab.

A message from the Bishop’s House in Jalandhar says Sister Mary Mercy died November 30, but did not give further details.

“We regret to inform you the passing away of Rev. Sr. Mary Mercy FIS (30), (Sadiq Community) today (30-11-2021). We pray for the departed soul and the bereaved members of her family,” the message says.

The 30-year-old nun belonged to Franciscan Immaculatine Sisters, an Italian congregation founded in 1881.

The funeral service will be held later at the nun’s home parish in Kerala, the diocesan message says. Sister Mercy hailed from Arthunkal near Cherthala in Kerala’s Alappuzha district.

“Sister Mercy’s body was found hanging in the convent chapel in the morning of November 30. Her body is taken to Kerala after completing the autopsy,” Father Anthony Thuruthy, the diocesan chancellor, told Matters India on December 1.

She had not professed her final vows. The convent is in Faridkot and the congregation had started work in the diocese some five years back, he added.

Faridkot is some 130 km southwest of Jalandhar, the headquarters of Punjab’s only Catholic diocese with the same name.
