Kolkata, Jan 4, 2021: Members of the Calcutta Salesian province has mourned the death of Father Samuel Sudorshon Mondol, a former dorector of Novices.

The Salesian priest died in Kolkata at 8.45 am on December 28, 2021. He was 49.

Father Mondol “had been undergoing immunotherapy since two months for sicknesses related to his liver, and recently, the kidneys. Of late he was undergoing palliative care. He died of massive cardiac arrest,” says a statement from the provincial office.

The funeral took place at 10 am on December 30, 2021, at Bandel Basilica, according to the Covid-19 guidelines.

One of his batch mates, Father Sunil Lakra, wrote, ”Really we will miss you, dear Father Samuel, you are such a nice, gentle and loving person.”

Father George Thirumalachalil in Nepal wrote, ”He had mastered the art of gentleness and kindness. He made many friends with his contagious smile and genuine concern.”

Father Shaji Joseph Puykunnel in Rome wrote Father Samuel’s ways were welcoming, his words encouraging and his smile disarming.

Hailing from Ranaghat, Krishnagar diocese in Nadia, West Bengal, the Salesian priest was an alumnus of Salesian College Sonada and Kristu Jyoti College Bangalore.

He obtained a Master degree in Spirituality from Salesian University Rome. His thesis was on Don Bosco’s Gentleness and Amorevolezza (loving-kindness): Reflections of His Students During the Beatification Process.

Father Samuel also studied Counseling and Spiritual Direction in Kent, United Kingdom, before he was appointed director of pre-novices at Azimganj and later novice master in Siliguri and Dhajea, Darjeeling. Earlier, while he was in the Krishnagar diocese, Father Samuel promoted the cause of Servant of God Father Francesco Convertini.
