Aruvikkara, Feb 16, 2022: Unknown persons become heroes overnight through their self-less service to humanity or their quick action to save someone from danger.

One such person is Kiran Shyam, sub inspector of Aruvikkara in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram district.

His brave act that saved a person from an angry mob has brought him accolades and stardom.

“I did only my duty as a policeman. I could not achieve it alone. What I have achieved is the credit of the whole police department. It was the fruit of a united effort. I believe if we work with full commitment we can achieve anything.”

He narrated the incident. “The chief minister had come for the inauguration of the school at Poovachal. I was on duty in front. This gentleman was sitting in the second row and suddenly he got up and was trying to get closer to the chief minister who was speaking. He was also speaking loudly. So, we tried to get him out from there.”

“Then the people suddenly rushed to attack him. It was so sudden that we did not have sufficient force to protect him. They were hitting him on the face and kicking his body. So, I wanted to protect him. The only way I found was to cover him with myself. I got some kicks and beatings. That is part of my job. But we saved him.”

Recognizing Shyam’s heroism, Rural Police head Divya V Gopinath announced his “good service entry.”

Shyam has reached this post in the police after journeying through various hurdles in his life that disrupted his college studies. Later he completed it. After graduation he worked as a daily wager. He has done works like plumbing and laying of tiles. Since two years he has been in the police service.

“If our heart is pure, God will stir us to do good. God may have inspired me to fall on his back and cover him. Till then I had not thought of it at all,” Shyam recalled.

About the moral policing indulged by the crowd, he said, “We have no right to punish anyone. Not even the police. Our duty is to find the one who have made a mistake. The court decides what the person has done is right or wrong. We wanted the person to be safe and inaugural function to continue without interruption.”
