New Delhi, May 13, 2022: At least 27 people were killed and scores wounded May 13 when a massive fire broke out in a commercial building in West Delhi.

Police said the fire engulfed a four-story building near the Mundka Metro station.

The fire department has so far recovered 27 bodies and the police fear the number might go up. Officials said they are yet to search a floor of the building. They have doused the fire and are now busy on rescue work late at night.

More than 40 people have been hospitalized with burn injuries. The police said they have recused around 70 people from the building.

The fire department officials said after they received the information about the blaze at 4:40 pm they rushed 20 fire tenders to the spot.

The fire started from the first floor of the building, which houses the office of a CCTV camera and router manufacturing company, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Sameer Sharma told reporters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led people in mourning the death. “My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery,” he tweeted.

The Prime Minister also announced 200,000 rupees each to the families of those who lost their lives. The injured will be give 50,000 rupees.
