Guwahati, June 24, 2023: The Assam Christian Forum on June 24 expressed its solidarity with the people of Manipur where an ethnic violence has raged for the past 53 days.
“We earnestly pray for the killings and violence to come to an immediate halt. Our hearts yearn for the restoration of normalcy in Manipur, where people of both ethnic communities can return to their homes, children to their studies and people to their workplaces without fear or displacement and intimidation,” says a press release from the forum that represents Christians of all denominations in Assam.
The citizens of Manipur, it says, had desperately hoped that the violence would cease after the federal home minister’s visit to the state. “However, to their great dismay, the situation on the ground remains unchanged, bringing about a significant setback and deepening the anguish of the affected population.”
Christians in Assam, a neighboring state, came together to offer prayers and invoke God’s intervention to end the distressing happenings in Manipur.
The Christians in Assam have prayed for all who have suffered the loss of loved ones and whose homes have been destroyed. “We seek justice for their grievances and believe that every life lost must be acknowledged and honored,” said the statement that urged the authorities to ensure that justice prevails and that those responsible for the violence are held accountable.
They also urged the government to prioritize human lives above political interests. We believe that it is crucial for the government to take necessary steps to end the Manipur crisis and foster peace, harmony, and reconciliation.
The forum also appealed to the state and federal government to find a comprehensive and sustainable solution that addresses the root causes of the unrest.
“We encourage all stakeholders to engage in dialogue, promoting understanding, and seeking ways to build bridges of unity and cooperation among diverse communities,” says the statement issued by Allen Brooks, the forum spokesperson.
The Christians in Assam have also reiterated their commitment to the principles of compassion, love, and justice as taught by Christ. “We extend our support and solidarity to the people of Manipur, assuring them of our unwavering prayers and unwavering efforts to promote peace and healing.”
