New Delhi, Nov 26, 2023: The Catholic bishops of India have greeted the Sikh community on the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, founder of their religion.

“This sacred day holds immense significance, not only for the Sikh community but for all of humanity, emphasizing the universal message of peace, compassion, and equality,” says a statement from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India.

The birth anniversary of the first of the ten Sikh Gurus falls on November 27 this year.

Archbishop Andrews Thazhath of Trichur, the conference president, says Guru Nanak Jayanti is a time for reflection and unity.

“Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings transcend religious boundaries and serve as a guiding light for all of humanity. His teachings inspire us to build bridges of understanding and tolerance, fostering an environment where all can coexist in peace and harmony. Today, as we celebrate the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, let us rekindle the spirit of brotherhood and compassion that he so profoundly advocated.”

The November 26 statement says the conference recognizes the common values shared between Christianity and Sikhism, emphasizing the need for dialogue and cooperation in addressing contemporary challenges.

As part of the celebrations, the conference encourages its members and the Christian community to participate in events organized by the Sikh community, fostering mutual understanding and promoting the spirit of oneness.

  1. In my hometown Kanpur the Sikhs will be having a community meal लंगर for 300,000 people. All voluntary work. Can the Catholic Church even imagine doing something like this. There is much to learn from others.
