Guwahati, Jan 17, 2025: A mysterious fire has gutted a chapel in Chokragaon, a village in the northeastern Indian state of Assam that celebrated the ordination of two local young men two days ago.

Authorities are investigating the January 15 night fire that reduced to ashes St. Theresa of Child Jesus Chapel under the Ambagaon parish of Tezpur diocese. The Church authorities suspect the involvement of some anti-social elements in the incident.

On January 12, Father Charles Murmu and Father Lambert Ekka from the same village were ordained priests. The following day, the chapel organized a thanksgiving Mass that brought together the entire village.

The fire broke out around 10 pm on January 15 while the villagers were engaged in a marriage celebration. Some villagers said they watched in shock and sadness as the fire engulfed their church.

The district administration and police are studying the cause of the fire.

“We are heartbroken by this incident. Our village chapel meant so much to us,” said Benjamin Tudu, a local village catechist. “We urge everyone to pray for the faithful of Chokragaon village during this very difficult and challenging time for us.”

Bishop Michael Akasius Toppo of Tezpur stressed the need for a thorough investigation into the matter. “Acts of violence against places of worship not only harm the physical structures but also the very fabric of our community. It is essential that we come together to foster peace and understanding,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Assam Christian Forum and the United Christian Forum of Udalguri have expressed their solidarity with the villagers, calling for prayers and support for them.
