Mangaluru, Jan 17, 2025: Sister Lismy Parayil, a member of the Congregation of Mother of Carmel, and known as the ‘camera nun of India’ will take part as a panellist in a world communications conference in Rome.
Sister Parayil was the first nun to feature in the “India Book of Records” — the highest recognition in visual media in the country. She was also featured in the Global Sisters Report.
She said she will leave for Rome on January 20 to attend the three-day World Communications Jubilee celebrations and the Conference that begins on January 24. She will also be part of a panel on cinematography.
“I consider it as a great blessing and recognition,” she told Matters India.
According to Natasa Govekar, director of the theological-pastoral department in the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication, the jubilee of the World of Communications will bring together professionals and practitioners in communication from around the globe to share their experiences.
The conference also aims to bring together Catholic nuns, engaged in both traditional and digital media landscapes, fostering a rich exchange of ideas and experiences.
Sister Parayil, a 40-year-old cinematographer, has so far recorded more than 1,500 videos — music albums, short films, documentaries, interviews and devotional songs.
One of her notable videos was on “Thrissur Pooram” (a religious and cultural festival in Kerala’s Thrissur town), a major Hindu cultural festival in India.
Sister Parayil manages a YouTube channel for her congregation that has more than 1 million views. She has uploaded hundreds of her videos there.
