Chennai, March 31, 2025 – Marking Transgender Day of Visibility, DBMedia Network Chennai has released the acclaimed documentary “TRANSCENDER,” chronicling the inspiring journey of K. Prithika Yashini, India’s first transgender police officer.
The 28-minute documentary celebrates Yashini’s historic achievement, highlighting her resilience and determination in breaking societal barriers. Yashini joined the police force on October 9, 2017, shattering glass ceilings and paving the way for greater inclusivity within law enforcement.
“This documentary aims to ignite a crucial public dialogue, shedding light on the challenges faced by the transgender community,” stated Fr. Ernest Rosario, Director and Producer of “TRANSCENDER” and Secretary of Boscom South Asia.
Currently serving as a Sub-Inspector in Chennai, Yashini’s story is one of triumph over adversity.
Rosario, who also penned the documentary’s script, emphasized, “Prithika’s pursuit of her childhood dream defied societal norms that often confine transgenders to marginalized lives.”
The documentary also addresses the complex relationship between the transgender community and law enforcement.
“Donning the khaki was particularly significant given the instances of police harassment and abuse against transgender individuals,” Rosario noted.
He further explained, “Prithika’s presence within the police force represents a powerful step towards a more just and equitable criminal justice system for vulnerable communities.”
“TRANSCENDER” has garnered significant recognition, including a National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRC) award in 2019. The documentary also received prestigious international nominations, including at the BAFTA (British Academy Awards), Peace on Earth Film Festival (Chicago), and Wicked Queer (Boston). END
