Mumbai, April 12, 2025: In a remarkable display of compassion and inclusion, the Salesians of Don Bosco in Naigaon, Mumbai, hosted a Day of Hope for People with Disabilities. The event was organized on 10th April under the guidance of Fr. Martis Dominic, Director of Don Bosco School Naigaon, in partnership with “Apang Seva,” a dedicated interfaith volunteer organization led by Fr. Michael Gonsalves and his team of social workers.

The event brought together around 400 individuals with disabilities, creating a vibrant atmosphere of solidarity and empowerment. It began with a heartfelt prayer, followed by Fr. Gonsalves’ expression of gratitude to Salesians and the parishioners of “Mary Help of Christians” Parish, and the youth group for their steadfast commitment to ensuring the success of the day.

Moments of Triumph and Unity
The day unfolded with an array of engaging activities, including games, group challenges, and traditional dance performances, where participants showcased incredible determination and joy.

“My son has an intellectual disability, but today he was treated with respect and warmth,” shared a single mother in attendance. “This event gives me the strength to keep going, knowing there are people who truly care. I’m deeply grateful to Apang Seva and their collaborators for their support, she said.”

Inspiring moments were plentiful throughout the day. Mr. Liston Coutinho captivated onlookers with his exceptional chess skills. Another highlight was a physically disabled participant’s triumphant tricycle race finish. A non-verbal participant also left a lasting impact, using written notes to communicate his thoughts and emotions.

Recognizing Excellence and Perseverance
The event culminated in an awards ceremony celebrating the exceptional accomplishments of individuals with disabilities. Swayantak Patil, an 8-year-old swimmer, was honored for his awe-inspiring 22-kilometer swim across the Arabian Sea. Wildlife photographer Sylvester Alphonso received accolades for his contributions to society, alongside recognition of his achievements in bird photography.

The prestigious Jidd Puraskar (“Iron Will Award”) was presented to Ms. Anushka Naik, who overcame challenges to earn her Master’s degree in Commerce and secure a position at Bassein Catholic Bank, serving as an inspiration to others.

Messages of Encouragement
Bishop Thomas Francis D’Souza of Vasai addressing participants said, “The courage shown by people with disabilities inspires us to embrace life’s challenges with gratitude and determination.” He urged attendees to practice kindness and serve others with joy and hope.

The event also marked the silver jubilee of both the “Mary Help of Christians” Parish and “Don Bosco” High School in Naigaon, Mumbai—institutions led by the Salesians of Don Bosco.
