Bangalore, May 7, 2025 — The Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) has appointed Fr. Dr. Patrick Mathias, SDB, as the new Secretary of its Bible Commission. The appointment was confirmed during the CCBI Executive Committee meeting held in Bangalore from May 6–7, 2025.

A member of the Salesians of Don Bosco, Fr. Patrick brings with him a wealth of academic and pastoral experience. At 49, he holds a Doctorate in Biblical Theology from the Angelicum University, Rome, and a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the prestigious Pontifical Biblical Institute (Biblicum), also in Rome.

Born on October 29, 1976, in Vaniyambadi, Tamil Nadu, Fr. Patrick currently serves as Vice Rector and Professor of Sacred Scripture at the Don Bosco Theological Centre (DBTC) in Kavarapettai. He is also the President of the CRI Minjur-Manali Vicariate in Chennai.

Well-regarded for his deep biblical insight and spiritual leadership, Fr. Patrick has taught at several major seminaries and theological institutes across India. He has also edited theological journals and led numerous retreats for priests and religious congregations nationwide.

His contributions extend beyond India through his active involvement in the Salesian Biblical Association (ABS) and participation in international conventions, including one held in Jerusalem. He is also a committed member of the Catholic Biblical Association of India (CBAI) and the Tamil Nadu Biblical Professors Association (TNBPA).

A gifted linguist, Fr. Patrick is fluent in Tamil, English, Italian, Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, among other languages.
