Gangtok, May 28, 2025: In a historic milestone for Sikkim and the LGBTQ+ community, Jackielynn Pradhan has become the first transgender woman to be crowned Miss Universe Sikkim 2025, marking a breakthrough in inclusivity and representation. She will now represent the state at the Miss Universe India pageant.
Jackielynn, 21, from Jorethang, triumphed over 45 contestants in the week-long contest that concluded on May 25. Her victory is a deeply personal achievement after years of bullying and struggle. “This has been my dream for nine years,” she told Kolkata daily The Telegraph. “Miss Sikkim is now a reality.”
Despite facing discrimination and cyberbullying, Jackielynn has remained resilient. “Even after winning, I receive transphobic comments online. But in real life, the support has been stronger. People hide behind screens to spread hate.”
Her journey of self-discovery began at 15. “Before pageants, only my family knew I was trans. But I realized I needed to embrace my truth — not just for myself, but for others like me.”
The pageant’s organizer, POSITUDE, confirmed her eligibility, stating she meets all Miss Universe norms.
Jackielynn joins Navya Singh, who last year became the first transgender woman to compete in the Miss Universe India pageant. Globally, Rikkie Kollé (Miss Netherlands) and Marina Machete (Miss Portugal) participated in the 2023 Miss Universe contest, following Angela Ponce of Spain in 2018, who was the first transgender participant.
The Miss Universe Sikkim contest welcomes girls aged between 17 and 29 with a minimum height of 5.2 feet
Jackielynn credits her mother, an overseas nurse, as her role model. “Her sacrifices shaped who I am.” She also spoke about the urgent need for better mental health awareness for queer youth, especially in smaller states.
Jackielynn’s triumph is more than a crown — it’s a message of courage, pride, and hope for thousands across India.
